Grants to USA nonprofit organizations in multiple states for sustainable projects that protect water resources and the environment. Funding is intended to support innovative, long-term projects that offer viable solutions benefitting communities throughout the country. The Foundation's preference is to fund project materials, equipment, and construction rather than just staff or researcher time on projects that will result in a direct outcome to a community.

Organizations or projects must be in geographic proximity (100 miles) of Woodard & Curran Foundation donors and additional preference will be given to applications that have the expressed support of a Woodard & Curran Foundation donor.

Preference will be given to projects with:

  • An innovative mindset – tying together new or existing ideas or technologies to successfully bring something new and valuable to the world.
  • Practical solutions that are feasible to implement within the grant timeline.
  • A focus on action and outcomes, not pure research.
  • A commitment to maximizing the impact of the Foundation's investment – this means the project will have a community-scale (not site-scale) impact.
  • A sustainable impact on the community – the project is intended to be long-term and easy to maintain.
  • Utilization of volunteers, including Woodard & Curran, Inc. staff.
  • Ability to implement in a real-world setting.
  • A meaningful impact to the community (large or small) where it will be implemented.

Indirect costs can be included in the grant application and should be outlined as part of the project budget. However, if the majority of the budget is used to pay for general operating costs or overhead, it will not be looked upon favorably in the selection process.

Estimated Total Program Funding:

Number of Grants:

One or two grants will be awarded.

Term of Contract:

In 2021, Woodard & Curran Foundation will award Impact Grants to be distributed evenly over three consecutive years: 2021-2023.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

An applicant must:
- Be a US-based organization;
- Have received 501(c)(3) nonprofit designation as of the date of the application and must retain that status throughout the grant term;
- Not be a house of worship or affiliated with a religious organization, a political organization, or political action committee;
- Not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, national origin, political persuasion, age, disability, gender or sexual orientation.

Nonprofits that do not have 501(c)(3) designation can submit under the umbrella of a partner 501(c)(3) organization.

The Foundation does not accept applications from organizations that are based outside the U.S., but if you are a U.S.-based organization working on an international project (i.e., in conjunction with U.S. resources and volunteers, similar to Engineers Without Borders, Agua Clara, Sustainability Without Borders, etc.), you are eligible for the grant. Note that projects that rely primarily on international staff with little or no U.S. benefit are not likely to fare well during the review process.

Research projects that are being done strictly for academic purposes will not be considered.

Pre-Application Information:

Application live: February 15, 2021
Application deadline: April 2, 2021
Notification: May 2021

To initiate the application process, fill out the form on the URL for Full Text (RFP). After you submit this form, you will receive an email with a link to the full application. The emailed URL is unique to your email address and allows you to begin your application, save your work along the way, and return to your application to complete it.

After submitting the application, you will be taken to a confirmation page. You will also receive an email confirmation.

Some organizations, such as universities, may have multiple departments with eligible projects. Therefore, the Foundation does not limit the number of applications for a given organization, and would consider each as a separate application. Each would stand on its own merits with an equal chance of being selected. However, please do not submit multiple applications for different components of the same overall project.
