Grants to Rhode Island organizations in eligible regions for programs that provide direct services for the benefit of children of African descent. Funding is intended to provide educational opportunities and meet the basic needs of children. While funding is intended for services to assist children under 14, programs for high school-aged children may be considered. Preference will be given to programs that serve many children. Grants must be used for children living in the greater Providence area.

Term of Contract:

Funds are are usually disbursed beginning in August following grant approval through March of the following year. Programs requiring funding early in the Shelter’s fiscal year (which begins on May 1st) should include such information in their applications.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grants are given to organizations serving black children, following the Shelter's historic mission of serving children of color, giving a strong priority to local children of African descent.

The Proposal Review Committee uses these guidelines when evaluating grant applications:

- Approval may take into consideration the other sources of an agency’s income
- Funding is for services to children, not for equipment or capital improvements

Pre-Application Information:

Requests must be completed and submitted by March 31, 2020.

Applicants will be informed of the Proposal Review Committee’s decision after the Shelter’s Annual Meeting in May.

Please be advised that these grants are made based on projected income; therefore, funds are generally not immediately available. They are usually disbursed beginning in August following grant approval through March of the following year.
