Grant Description
Grants to USA, Canada, and International students to defray the costs of attending a technical symposium about cyber security. Grants are made to full-time students, scientists who identify as female or who are members of groups underrepresented in tech, and undergraduate or graduate computer science students who are African American, Black, or members of the larger African Diaspora. Priority will be given to first-time applicants. Awardees are expected to attend the entire conference.

The 32ndUSENIX Security Symposium will take place on August 9-11, 2023, at the Anaheim Marriott in Anaheim, CA, USA. The USENIX Security Symposium brings together researchers, practitioners, system administrators, system programmers, and others interested in the latest advances in the security and privacy of computer systems and networks.

The following grant programs are available:

  • Student Grant Program: The USENIX Student Grant Program provides funds to cover registration fees and assist with travel and accommodation expenses for students who wish to attend USENIX conferences and workshops.
  • Diversity Grant Program: As part of USENIX's ongoing commitment to encourage diversity in advanced computing, USENIX offers Diversity Grants to support computer scientists interested in attending the conferences.  Applicants must attend all days of the main conference program for which they are applying. Successful applicants will receive funds to help defray the expense of conference attendance.
  • Grants for Black Students: In addition to the Diversity Grants, USENIX is pleased to offer grants for Black students interested in attending USENIX Conferences. Applicants are expected to attend the three full days of the main Conference Program and to agree to be contacted by USENIX and grant program sponsors about future events and opportunities.

- All undergraduate or graduate computer science students who are Black, African American, or members of the larger African Diaspora are encouraged to apply.

For Student Grants, preference is shown to:
- Current full-time students attending accredited institutions, studying computer science.

For Diversity Grants:
- All computer scientists from academia or industry who identify as female or who are members of groups underrepresented in tech are encouraged to apply. Applicants must also work in or study computer science or a related field

Ineligible
Postdocs are not eligible for either type of Student Grant; however, they are welcome to apply for Diversity Grants if they meet the qualifications outlined above.

Pre-Application Information
Submission deadline: Monday, June 5, 2023

- Every effort is made to send out notifications to student grant applicants approximately two weeks after the grant application deadline and before the conference's Early Bird deadline. All applicants will be notified - both those who are being awarded a grant and those who are not - of their application status.
- Applicants should not apply for a grant if they have other funds available to them, such as through a faculty advisor, or if they have received a grant through USENIX in the past year.
- If the applicant is applying for a grant and requires a visa to attend the conference, they should submit the visa application as soon as possible.
- Applicants should not register for the conference--even if they are an author or a presenter--until they are notified about their grant. If an applicant receives a grant, they will be sent detailed registration instructions.
- Please do not submit multiple grant applications to a single conference. This will not increase the chances of receiving funding. Multiple grant applications from an individual for a single conference will be de-prioritized for review.
- Applicants are expected to attend the three full days of the main Conference Program, and to agree to be contacted by USENIX and grant program sponsors about future events and opportunities.

- For student grants: As part of the student's application, it is required that their faculty advisor complete a form supporting their request for funds.

Estimated Size of Grant
USENIX provides travel funds to assist with hotel and airfare. The award for travel funds is based on both the amount of overall funding available to distribute to all applicants and the specific funding requests the applicants have made. If the applicant leaves an expense request line empty, the funder will assume that there is no need for financial assistance for that expense.

For the student grant program, the funder does not guarantee assistance to speakers or participants, and student grants rarely cover full travel costs.

Term of Contract
The 32nd USENIX Security Symposium will take place on August 9-11, 2023.
