Grant Description
Grants of up to $50,000 to USA, Canada, and International faculty members at academic institutions for research addressing histiocytic disorders. Funding is intended for cutting-edge research into the mechanisms, causes, and improved methods of treatment for histiocytic disorders.

Proposals are evaluated on the basis of science, feasibility, and relevance. All proposals are expected to address one or more of the histiocytic disorders; below are areas of particular interest; however, all relevant areas of interest are considered.

  • Mechanisms of disease pathogenesis
  • Biology (maturation, migration and immune function) of dendritic cells, macrophages and/or lymphocytes in disease pathogenesis
  • Derangements of cytokine production or function
  • Neurologic and neuropsychiatric manifestations of histiocytosis
  • Studies of rare histiocytoses -- Juvenile xanthogranuloma, Erdheim-Chester disease, Rosai-Dorfman disease
  • Studies of histiocytic disorders in adults
  • Discovery of new disease markers
  • Quality of life, symptomatology, and survivorship

Additional Eligibility Criteria
An applicant must be a full-time faculty member at an academic institution.

The Histiocytosis Association grant program is open to all projects, both in the United States and Internationally.

Funding is awarded to the Principal Investigator’s institution only. It is the responsibility of that institution to disburse funding for joint projects.

Ineligible
The Association does not fund overhead costs, travel budgets, or principal investigator salaries.

Proposals to receive renewal or additional new funding for a previously funded project are discouraged.

Pre-Application Information
The deadline has been extended and proposals will now be accepted from April 17-June 11, 2023.

Dates are meant to give a general idea of the grant cycle timeline and are subject to change at any time without notice.

- Applications Accepted Online: Grants open on or about on April 17 and close on June 11
- Processing and Scientific Committee Review Session: Early June- September
- Processing and Histiocytosis Association Board Secondary Review Session: September – Early December
- Notice of Award: on or about December 15
- Funding Awarded: by December 31
- 12 Month Report due for awarded applicants: January 30

The application deadline will NOT be extended individually for any reason. This includes but is not limited to: special individual circumstances, U.S. or International holidays and meetings or conventions which coincide with the deadline date. Applicants are given approximately 45 days to submit a request for research proposal and should plan accordingly.

Proposals must be submitted via the Histiocytosis Association website through the online Research Grants Portal. Proposals must be submitted in the English language and follow the Research Proposal Format.

- Applicants/investigators will receive an automatic confirmation of receipt of their proposal by email.
- Applicants/investigators will not be able to edit them after submission.
- Principal Investigators may submit only one application for funding as the Principal Investigator. However, a Principal Investigator may be listed as a Secondary Investigator on a second grant application. Secondary Investigators may be listed on more than one application.

Estimated Size of Grant
The funding level for the Research Grant applications is up to $50,000. Any grants requesting funding in excess of $50,000 will not be considered for the grant cycle.

Term of Contract
- Research grants are awarded for a one-year term beginning on December 31. Proposals that require longer than one-year are not subject to review and will be disqualified.
- Should an awarded project need unexpected additional time beyond one-year, a request may be made for consideration prior to the due date of the annual reports. Extension of funding is not guaranteed and may affect future grant proposals.
