Grant Description

Grants to Rhode Island nonprofit organizations for workforce training programs for youth. Interested applicants are required to submit a letter of inquiry prior to submitting the full proposal. Funding is intended to support programs that prepare young adults ages 14 to 24 to enter the job market through educational programs that offer technical, household, industrial, or domestic training.

Preference is given to nonprofit, community-based organizations that provide vocational or job skills training programs in the state of Rhode Island.

Successful applications from nonprofit organizations must offer vocational or job skills training via an established course that is offered to youth and young adults ages 14 to 24.

More specifically, courses must:

Offer vocational or job training, rather than general education. ESL/ESOL may be included in vocational/job training requests
Focus on youth and young adults, ages 14 to 24, rather than adults and/or people who are currently employed
Be established courses (as opposed to newly launched)

Although household and domestic training programs are mentioned in Ms. Harris' will, the Harris Foundation is focused on preparing youth and young adults, ages 14 to 24, to work outside of the home.

Through their support of charitable organizations, the Foundation seeks to positively impact the lives of the traditionally underserved within their communities.

Preference is given to nonprofit, community-based organizations that provide vocational or job skills training programs in the state of Rhode Island.

Ineligible

The Foundation does not consider:
- Grants for startup programs
- Grant requests for capital projects
- Programs targeted to middle school students or younger, even though Ms. Harris mentions boys and girls in her will.

Pre-Application Information

Submit Letter of Inquiry online by June 1.

Select applicants will receive an email invitation in June to submit a full application by August 1.
Final decisions by December 31.

Please submit online applications by 11:59 p.m. on the day of the foundation’s deadline date. If the deadline falls on a weekend or a federally recognized holiday, applications are due on the next business day by 11:59 p.m.

The Emma G. Harris Foundation application involves a 2-stage process:
- Stage 1: An online Letter of Inquiry (LOI) must be submitted on, or before June 1.
- The Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education must certify that each LOI applicant meets the Harris Foundation's requirements, specifically that the program provides vocational or job skills training via an established course that is offered to youth and young adults ages 14 to 24. Certification is then sent to the Foundation’s trustee, Bank of America, N.A.
- Stage 2: Once LOIs are certified by the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, select applicants will receive an email invitation in June from the trustee to submit a full application on, or before August 1.

Applicants invited to submit full applications will be notified of final grant decisions before December 31.

Term of Contract

The majority of grants from the Harris Foundation are 1 year in duration.
