Awards to USA, Canada, and International journalists and student journalists to recognize exceptional reporting on disabilities. Entries can be presented digitally, broadcasted, or printed. Awards are offered for media in both large and small markets. Eligible applicants include professional journalists as well as college student journalists.
The Katherine Schneider Journalism Award for Excellence in Reporting on Disability is the only professional journalism contest devoted exclusively to disability coverage.
Large Media Market Radio—top 20 radio market size (according to Nielsen ratings); television—network or syndicated TV and Top 20 markets; print—150,000 circulation or greater (largest single day, including digital replica), wire services, magazines, weeklies, and online-only media with a primary focus on a regional or national audience
Small Media Market Radio—below top 20 radio market size (according to Nielsen ratings); television—below Top 20 markets; print—150,999 circulation (largest single day, including digital replica), magazines, weeklies, and online-only media with a primary focus on a state, city, metro area or county
For the second year, the Gary Corcoran Student Prize for Excellence in Reporting on Disability, which recognizes the best work by college journalists on topics related to disabilities, also will be awarded.
Journalists working in digital, print, audio and broadcast media are eligible to enter both contests. Entries are accepted from outside the U.S., although the work submitted must be in English.
Gary Corcoran Student Prize for Excellence in Reporting on Disability:
- The contest is open to anyone who is enrolled in a U.S. or international college or university in 2022/23, while studying for an academic degree. International students may also enter.
- The entrant must have been enrolled as a student at the time of publication or broadcast. Work completed for internships or classes is acceptable if it meets the publication requirement.

Estimated Size of Grant
Katherine Schneider Journalism Award: For professional journalists, winners will receive a total of $8,000 in cash awards in large and small media categories. First-place winners in each category receive $2,500 and an invitation to speak about their work at an awards ceremony this fall at ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Second-place winners receive $1,000, and third-place winners will receive $500.
Gary Corcoran Student Prize: $2,500 for first place, $1,500 for second place and $1,000 for third place.
Term of Contract
Entries for both contests must have been published or aired between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023.
